About Me

Del Hungerford was the Adjunct Professor of Clarinet at Whitworth University in Spokane, Washington from 1994 to 2022. In addition, she taught elementary music at Washington State University in Pullman, Washington. She also taught classes as needed for the University of Idaho.

After receiving her Bachelor of Music in clarinet from the University of Idaho (Go Vandals!), Del traveled to Yale University to complete her masters degree. She met and worked with people including Benny Goodman, Arthur Weisburg, Thomas Nyfenger, Otto-Werner Mueller, and other wonderful faculty at Yale. She then took a break from attending college and began a public school teaching career in Seattle, Washington. While in Seattle, Del performed with the Marzena Contemporary Ensemble, the Northwest Sinfonietta, and opened a private clarinet studio. Eventually, she completed her doctoral studies University of Washington with a D.M.A. in clarinet performance.

Since retiring from academia in the spring of 2022, Del focuses on creating healing music. You can find her music at Healing Frequencies Music

Del's dissertation "The Use of a Flexible Fiber Optic Scope to View the Oral Cavities of Experienced and Less Experienced Clarinetists" (purchasable through UMI Dissertation Express) presents information that can help teachers understand how important tongue placement is while playing the clarinet (and other wind instruments). Her findings have led to her creating new methods of teaching "voicing" on the clarinet, especially in the altissimo register of the instrument.
